1  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / EyePhone - Upcycled iPhone Case on: April 01, 2010 08:35:01 AM
I've been needing a new case for my iPhone for a while now and like a lot of you, I'm sure, I said to myself... I should MAKE one!

I love to be thrifty and find clever ways to re-use things so the body of the case is made out of something recycled. I bet you can't tell what it is!! (Don't worry, I'll reveal what it is in the tutorial below.)

OK, are you dying in anticipation of wanting to know how to make one yourself? Well, here ya go!

Step 1:
Get yourself an empty toilet paper roll tube. You're surprised that that's what it's made of, right?! (If anyone needs a further tute on how to get an empty roll of toilet paper, feel free to Private Message me and I can explain.)

Step 2:
Cut a vertical slit in the back of the tube at a perfect 90 degree angle from the base of the tube. I recommend investing in a pair of laser scissors because you want to get this perfectly straight. After all, this iPhone case is made out of a toilet paper roll and you don't want it to look shoddy when it's done.

Step 3:
Glue on some fun embellishments. Or, just use some sturdy trusty doublesided tape like I did! (The embellishments might fall off here and there but that's part of what makes the whole iPhone experience so interactive!)

Here's a picture of me pressing one of the buttons.

And here's a picture to show you how sturdy the iPhone case is. I had my husband take a picture while I pressed all the buttons at a rate of 3 buttons per nanosecond.

I hope you've enjoyed this and that you all post pictures of your own iPhone cases using this tutorial!

(P.S. Note that one small downside of this iPhone case is that every time you pick it up the iPhone falls out of it. So be sure you are standing over carpet or grass at all times as you use this.)
2  NEWS AND DISCUSSION ABOUT CRAFTSTER / Latest News / Craftster Transition to New Servers Complete - Issue Statuses Here on: February 24, 2010 03:54:24 PM
Hi everyone!  We're back up and Craftster has been moved to new servers.  There are bound to be a few little bugs and kinks to work out so if you see anything weird or broken, we'd love it if you''d let us know.  Thanks! Leah

Here are the statuses of some known issues:

1. Single quotes (i.e. apostrophes) in posts get repeated twice. Fixed!

2. You will need to go into your Profile and fix your timezone since the new server is on PST rather than EST.
To do this:
- click My Craftster > My Profile > Look and Layout Preferences
- Where it says "Time Offset:" click "auto detect"
- then click "Change Profile" at the bottom

3. Clicking the "Show Images Only" tab gives funky results. Fixed!

4. Spell check not working. Fixed!

5. We need to increase the file upload size allowed in Craftster's picture hosting. Fixed!

6. Intermittent server errors. Fixed as of Mar 16 (hopefully!)!

7.  Mar 6: Unable to access the search deamon. Fixed!

8.  Some members not receiving all or any reply/PM notifications.  (Sample of members affected: gammykatie, Burgz, Aikibookworm) Fixed!

9.  Mar 16:  Board organization is jumbled. - Fixed!

UPDATES:

We expect to experience some brief outages tonight/over the next few hours as we tweak some settings in our new home.  Sorry in advance for the delays, but it shouldn't take too long.  We expect this will resolve many of these random issues we've been experiencing.

We are definitely going to re-enable the full version of "Show all topics started by this member," but it may not be done today (Monday, 03/15).  The gremlins are still tweaking this one.  We'll update when it's fully available once again.

Thanks for all of your reports, feedback and information through this transition.  We really appreciate all of your help (and crafts Grin).

Today, Tuesday March 16, at 4 PM PST, Craftster will be in maintenance mode for approximately two hours.

During this downtime, our team will gently capture the gremlins and have them transported to a fabulous forever home far away from Craftster.  They'll be safe and much happier in their new home.

At the end of the downtime, we should be much more stable once again [and gremlin-free]. Smiley

Hi all!

This is just a brief note to let you know that tomorrow, Thursday February 25, 2010, from approximately 10:00 AM PST to 1:00 PM PST we will be transitioning Craftster to new servers.

During this time period, Craftster will be in read-only mode which means that all parts of Craftster will be accessible to read to your hearts content but you will not be able to post messages, pictures, send PMs etc during the transition. So please plan accordingly if you have swap communications you want to make, etc.

We apologize for the interruption and hope to get the transition done as quickly as possible! Any crafts you can make and offer as sacrifice to the "server-move gods and goddesses" would be helpful! I believe they are partial to all forms of macaroni glued to paper plates. Cheesy

Thanks!

3  NEWS AND DISCUSSION ABOUT CRAFTSTER / Latest News / 02/18/10 - Changes at Craftster on: February 18, 2010 10:57:48 AM
Hello Everyone,

I have a two big pieces of news that I want to share with you.

1. NameMedia (the company that acquired Craftster in April 2008) decided to sell their "home and garden"-related communities to a company called Internet Brands.

2. I'm moving on from the world of Craftster.

I know this is big news (for me anyway! and maybe for you!) so here's some more information that you might be curious about.

Why did NameMedia sell Craftster?

NameMedia decided to shrink back the online community part of their business in order to focus on the parts that made more business sense for them.

Who is Internet Brands?

Internet Brands does a few different things but their biggest focus is running "niche" online communities. If you go to their website you'll see they they have acquired a couple hundred online communities on just about every subject under the sun. They also happen to own the online forum software package called vBulletin.

What can Craftster expect from Internet Brands?

Internet Brands has lots of experience with what to do and what not to do with community sites. You can see from the sheer variety of sites they own that they also appreciate that each community has it's own unique personality and they don't try to force all communities to fit a single mold. They have lots of people working for them -- content specialists, programmers, server admins, ad sales people, marketing people, etc etc. So I can't promise that I know exactly what they are going to do but since they have invested in buying Craftster, I think we can expect any potential changes to be made carefully and judiciously without rocking the boat and with the only intention being to improve things.

I also think that since we've been through the scary process of being acquired once and realizing that the buyer's intention is not to do something crazy and harmful to the site, that we can rest assured that this is the case here too. In all honestly as a result of my conversations with Internet Brands I feel totally comfortable with their views on running online communities.

Who's staying on with Craftster as staff

sweets4ever, jungrrl, rackycoo and kittykill are all going to continue be on Craftster's staff to continue their awesome work on Craftster with Internet Brands. And of course the fabulous Craftster moderators are still in place.

OK. So now the part about me leaving...

Internet Brands graciously offered me a position which would allow me to continue to be involved Craftster as well as to take on some other interesting tasks at the company. I really appreciate that they saw the potential in me for this job and it was really tempting in many ways. But I decided that after 6.5 years running Craftster, it's a good time for me to try doing something different in life. So, I'll soon be on my way! It's definitely going to be huuuuuuuuge change for me but I think it will be good. I've loved running Craftster and feel soooo lucky to have been able to do this for the past 6.5 years, but I'm also looking forward to trying something different.

I definitely plan to continue to be a part of Craftster as a member and who knows maybe even a moderator too. I'm so excited for the very real possibility that I'll finally have time to post my own projects and join some swaps! Grin (I'll also be heavily involved here for a few weeks to help transition the site over to Internet Brands, so you're not rid of me yet. Cheesy)

Thank you to everyone -- members, guests, mods, and the Craftster staff -- for everything YOU have done to make Craftster the amazing community it is today. I always say that I'm the one who keeps the plumbing working but that YOU ALL are the ones that keep the heart beating and keep the Craftster spirit alive! I'm so appreciative to each and every one of you for making Craftster the BEST crafting community on the Internet and giving me so much to be proud of and humbled by every day!

Lots of love and humongous piles of appreciation for you all,

Leah  Kiss Kiss Kiss

P.S. Last night at 9:00 pm I decided Craftster has long deserved a highlights video reel! Grin I wish I'd started working on it sooner because there's lots more I would have included but here's where working from 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. got me! Cheesy And best of all, think of ALL the highlights yet to come. Grin
