1  Environmentally-Friendly and HypoAllergenic Nutlace in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by kaz814 on: April 01, 2014 05:05:08 AM
So with all the cold, snowy weather we've been having lately, I had the urge to make something pretty and spring-like.

After checking the coming trends, I settled on one focus: nuts.  Unfortunately, I'm a teacher and with all the peanut allergies, I couldn't wear a nut to school.  However, I found a solution: a packing peanut.

Using 3 strands of turquoise embroidery floss and some beads and stones I had squirreled away, I centered the peanut in the place of honor.  I think it turned out great, and will definitely be something that will get noticed!

What do you think?

and a closer, money shot:

3  Re: 2013 Christmas Tree Along! in Winter Holidays by kaz814 on: December 01, 2013 03:37:17 PM
I used to have an artificial tree, but my rabbit decided the wire made a good teeth tester and ... yeah.  So a new tree for this year.  I decided on a real tree and looked all over for a small one (since my house is teensy and I wanted it out of range of rabbit teeth).  After searching and not finding what I wanted, I bought a regular sized tree, had them cut it in half, got the boughs for decoration and a small tree.  Cheesy  I was just lucky that the trees were oddly affordable!

I've decorated it in Craftster chic.  75% are ornaments I've received in swaps, either hand made or purchased for me, with the last quarter being sentimental favorites I just can't not put up!  You can also see the stocking I received last year in the Stocking swap and the garland I got the year before in the Stocking swap. Cheesy

And nighttime:

4  Re: Holiday Ornament ATC Swap Gallery in The Swap Gallery by kaz814 on: November 23, 2013 01:30:49 PM
I received from vincentvanbuck and stellou!

vincentvanbuck needlefelted a nativity scene for me - I simply adore it!  The colors are vibrant (and perfect with the blue and yellow) and the scene is awesome.  I cannot believe this was his first venture into needlefelting.

and stellou used my Christmas tree theme and my doors theme to make two gorgeous ATCs.

The background of the tree is burlap with the tree embroidered on, and the door has real hardware!  And a wee little key!

Thank you both SO much!

I've received from Helcura and kosmicgirl!

From Helcura ...

A fabulous nature scene, complete with adorable fox!

and the back with a very cool pinwheel:

And a gorgeous stained "glass" which I adore.  The colors are amazing.

And the back:  (Funny thing, my very first ornament I got when I was a baby looked very similar!  Love it!)

And from kosmicgirl:

She went with my nativity scene and drew or painted (I think) the wisemen.  I am in awe of her skills.:

and the back with the star:

Thank you both SO SO much!  They are going to look amazing on my tree!

6  RRR Challenge: Holiday Edition in Reusing/Recycling/Recrafting: Challenge Entries by kaz814 on: November 01, 2013 04:54:50 PM

It's beginning to be that time of year again!  And this time, the Reusing, Recycling and Recrafting Board has a challenge for YOU.  What sort of holiday decorations (Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Yule, New Year's, etc.) can you create from recycled materials?

To be eligible, the final project should be at least 50% recycled.   More reused items=better!  Let's save the earth while we make our homes prettier!   Not only will we leave a beautiful world to our children, but we might inspire others to do the same.  (Please note, we're on the honor system with this.  I won't be checking, but the whole point is reusing and recycling!)

Here are the details for the challenge:

During the week of December 1st through December 7th (until 11:59 pm, Eastern) you can post pictures of your entry. As it's impossible to know if your entry is 100% original, if you're inspired by someone else's project, please give that person a shout out!

Voting will open on December 8th and run for one week.  Voting will take place right here and the first place winner (US or non-US) will get Eco-Craft: Recycle Recraft Restyle by Susan Wasinger.

If you have questions, feel free to ask them here! Smiley

7  RRR Craftalong in REUSING/RECYCLING/RECRAFTING by kaz814 on: October 15, 2013 02:37:18 PM

There has been some discussion on the FOC board (thanks, bookstorebabe and Onyxnox) about starting up a Reusing/Recycling/Recrafting craftalong, so here it is!

The idea is that each month, we'll have a reused/repurposed/recycled item that we'll use in our crafting or we'll have a theme around which you can recycle anything your heart desires!  Crafts can be posted in this thread and on the board they'd usually go under so everyone can share in the recrafting goodness!

So who's in?

All holidays are welcome in this swap!  Winter-themed ATCs are great for wreaths, packages, cards and other decorations.  Since these ATCs may be used as ornaments, please add a way to hang the ATC, as well.

Each crafter will be assigned to a small group of 3-4, depending on the total number of participants.  If a crafter would like to part of more than one group, please indicate so on the questionnaire.  New swappers may only participate in one group.  You will be required to send one ATC to each member of your group.  Members of the group may include those in other countries.  If you sign up for this swap, you are agreeing to potentially sending internationally.  Please take pictures before sending your ATC.

Send-outs are by November 16, 2013, which should be in time for most major winter holidays!  After sending and receiving, please PM kaz814 with ATC SWAP: SENT or ATC SWAP: RECEIVED.  Since USPS tracking is unavailable for envelopes, should an envelope lose its way, you will be required to resend.

Please post pictures of the ATCs you've received in the Gallery so we can all admire everyone's art!  If you are unable to do so, please indicate it on your questionnaire and tell your partners so they can make sure to take and post pictures of the ornaments they send to you.

10  Featured Member - liliv-1 in PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS by kaz814 on: August 18, 2013 04:19:55 PM
We have a new Featured Member in the Purses, Bags, and Wallets board!
Congratulations, liliv-1!!!

liliv-1 has only been a member of Craftster for six months or so, but she's been a very active member on the PBW board.  She has posted gorgeous bags, participated in the Purses Craftalong and is supportive of other PBW bag makers, too!  So we decided to ask her a few questions and figure out her awesome bag-making secrets!

Why (and when) did you begin making purses, bags, and wallets?

I started sewing bags and purses in a more serious way last summer,  until then I had made only very few totes. But last summer I saw on etsy a couple of really enviable purses and  I wanted to make something similar on my own. I researched on the web about bag making and found many useful tips and tutorials. At this point I want to thank the Craftster community because it was my the biggest information source! It proved that bag making is a big addiction to me! Smiley

How long have you been sewing?
I grew up seeing my mother sewing all our fancy clothes, so sewing was always something very familiar to me. I used to help her many times, but she never allowed me to use the sewing machine: she was afraid! When I  graduated from high school my mother purchased a sewing machine for me as a present and I've been sewing my own clothing since then!

What type of sewing machine do you have?
I still have the singer model my mum bought for me when I was 18 years old. I also have a diamantino model I bought  8 years ago, which proved to be a very reliable model.

Do you have any tips for anyone looking to make their first purse, bag, or wallet?
Three word: Insist, research, experiment!

What other crafts do you enjoy?
Sewing is the only craft that I enjoy!!! I would like to learn other crafts like knitting or crocherting, but this would mean reduce my sewing time and I don't want this to happen! Smiley

What's your favorite aspect of Craftster?
I like the vast variety of this community! You can find anybody: a beginner, an expert etc and many different crafts as well. I also like that it is a huuuuge source of information!

What is your favorite PBW project on Craftster that you have posted?

A big denim purse which I made for a sewalong here on crafster

What is your favorite PBW project on Craftster that someone else has posted?

I love very much all hax's purses. My favorite is the one with the the metal eyelet handle she posted.

I also liked very much this yummy lunch bag with the lovely drawstring
 from Midnight Sun

Congratulations, liliv-1!  We can't wait to see more of your fabulous bags!
