1  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Completed Projects / 1 August 2014 Fiber Friday! on: August 01, 2014 09:52:18 AM
Where is everyone? Look what I've been doing!

Spinning that brown alpaca from a couple weeks ago at the market. 1/2 of the fleece gave me this weighing in at 10.6 oz and ~450 yards:

better color shot:

And I've continued to clean and dye some white alpaca fleece.
The purple fractured but I like it, and the pink only dyed on the one side of each bag, weird. I had 2 bags of each color and one of the purples came out much stronger than the other. Love it!

And a happy rainbow in a box! I need to sort out 4 more bags of white and then I'm gonna card them. Hopefully I will get them spun up and then ply the single with a silver strand of something. I'm so excited! Right now it's call Unicorn Sh*t in my head, but I'm sure after I spin it and have to tag it I will have a better name for it.
2  FIBER ARTS / Dyeing: Completed Projects / Dye balloon fight! on: August 01, 2014 09:44:45 AM
I filled some water balloons with RIT dye and we had a fight. I had bought some white shirts for each of the family just for this occasion.

And after i dried them, then washed them a couple times:

Details of swap:
This is a Pinterest swap, meaning that your fellow Craftsters will claim you for something you have pinned on your Pinterest site.  If you don't have a Pinterest but are interested, go here www.pinterest.com to request one or PM the organizer your email address to request an invite. We recommend having at least 200 pins before you start a Pinterest Swap.

If you are late in a previous Pinterest swap, please do not sign up until you send. You will not be accepted. If you still have outstanding claims in any previous round, however, you can still join as long as you are not already late in sending. Also, these swaps are totally independent of each other so if you have maxed out your unreceived but not late claims in last month's swap, you can still make that number this month. Also, the swap organizer reserves the right to refuse participation to those C-sters that she does not feel can meet the requirements or that do not jive well with the group.

Also please note that this swap requires that you communicate with your partner and the organizer.  Please send a PM (including the month of the swap) when you claim, when you send, and when you receive.  People who consistently fail to communicate will be asked to take a break from the Pinterest swap and maybe try again in two months.

Please do not post in this thread until you have been approved by the organizer. This thread is for lists only. Only post once. If you need to change/add something, simply "Modify" your post. The discussion/gallery thread is located here. Post as soon as possible after signing up so we know you have found the thread and that you are getting updates.

FAQ: Please READ

How does this swap work?
You may choose from anyone's Pinterest board once they have posted a link and bio in this thread.  This is not a chain list swap; its more of a free for all swap.  However, when possible it is nice to claim from those who haven't been claimed or who have claimed more than they have been claimed for. You have two weeks from the date you claim to send your item on its way to the lucky recipient.  Remember to PM the organizer and the recipient when you claim, send, and receive. Please include the swap name and month in your subject line! Please make sure to tell her who you are claiming, sending to, or receiving from. You may have up to 2 outstanding (not received) claims. If you are FOC you may have up to 3 outstanding claims.  Everyone MUST make at least one claim.

What should my bio and link look like?
Once you have been approved, you may post in the list thread.  There is no one way to do this but please be sure your bio includes the following:
         - your location and a brief bio (include allergies in red please)
         - your Pinterest link
         - list of boards that are to be used for this swap, or simply say something like "all my boards are game"
         - whether you are okay with supply claims
         - if you are joining specifically for Christmas presents or for a birthday or some other special occasion

--It is OK to link to specific items you want in your bio, as long as there is flexibility and people can still claim you for other items from your boards. This is not a Wishlist swap, but putting your top items in one place is OK--

What do I need to send?
This swap is for either one medium or 2-3 small items for each claim.  A medium item is one that takes 2 or more hours, $10 - $30, some examples are a single necklace or bracelet or a scarf.  A small item is one that takes 2 or less hours, $10 or less, some examples are earrings/wallets/pouches/bookmarks.

How do the organizers ensure that claims are even?
We don't. But we do try.  One way is that we highlight your name when you have claimed more times than you have been claimed.  We ask that people claim from those that haven't been claimed yet or who have claimed more often than they have been claimed, but there is no guarantee that if you send 5 times that you will receive 5 items.  In fact, theoretically it is quite possible to not get claimed at all.  If this is a major concern for you and you know you would miserable if things were not always even, this may not be the swap for you.  However, I will say that for the most part this is not a big problem in this swap so far.

How closely does the item I send need to resemble the item pinned?
It depends on who you are claiming.  Read the bios carefully.  Read the pins carefully.  Some of us pin items for inspiration and are fine with items that are simply inspired by our pins.  Others would like the item to look as close to the pin as possible.

What happens if I am flaked on?
If you are flaked on, you will only receive an angel for as many packages as you have sent.  If you were claimed for 3 packages and you sent 2 packages and one package was flaked on - you will not receive a swap angel.

What do I do if I'm not being claimed?
If you are not being claimed, it might be time to consider your pins.  Do you have enough variety?  Are there enough small and medium items?  Do you have items pinned that require a variety of crafty mediums (ex: knitting, crocheting, sewing, beading, embroidery, etc...)?  Are your pins realistically craftable?  You should shoot for at least 20-30 pins (this includes only those pins you want to be claimed); maybe more if most of your items are on the large side or primarily in one crafty medium.  We have some talented folks on here... but not everyone can do all crafts.  If you find you aren't being claimed...try adding more pins. Annchen posted a great reply about this in the December swap that I highly encourage reading if you are not being claimed.

5  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Completed Projects / 11 July '14 Fiber Friday on: July 11, 2014 01:47:58 PM
Been working through those alpaca fleeces I got. In May I was given one with the intent of cleaning it and spinning it and splitting the yarn I spin from it and then I bought 2 more blankets for 25$/each and then I got 3 more blankets and 1 whole fleece for 5$ a pop. Totally finished with cleaning/carding the first one, Brownie, which was a light brown. Each batt looks like this:

And I got 21 batts from the whole thing. No idea on weight. I'll measure that out after I spin. Here is the milk crate I'm taking with me to the market tomorrow to spin up:

And here is the first batt I've spun up. I tried dizzing the fiber off the drum carder but don't think it's right for this fiber, at least not without some blended colors, so I spun it so I wouldn't have to worry about how to keep it all together. It's hard with 3 kids and 2 fur babies!

And I've been working on the next fleece, Kuzco. I decided not to just leave it white though, so after washing I've been dyeing it with the leftover Easter dye. The first 2 nylon lingerie bags (that's what I wash in) full I dyed blue and the next 2 were green. I have orange, yellow, and pink left. I'm worried about the pink, but I think I may have some Wilton's dye I can throw in to help it. I'm also wanting to get 4 bags of white plain and then card them all together and make some Unicorn Poop yarn. We will see how it all goes. Here is the blue and green coloring so far.

And here is what the table in my ballroom looks like right now:

I much prefer cleaning raw alpaca to raw sheep's wool!

8  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Ongoing Pinterest Swap on: June 23, 2014 12:42:20 PM
So I organized the OPS for a while but it was kind of dying so I took a break. Here is the last round in case you don't know what's up with that. Some people said they would still be interested in it again after a little while. Would July be a good time to start it back up or should I wait another month or more? Would it be more interesting if each month there was a theme, like "Pinterest for my SO" or "Pinterest for Christmas" or something like that? Is it worth reviving at all?
9  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Completed Projects / Fiber Friday 30 March 2014 on: May 30, 2014 01:37:23 PM
So I know you have all been making fibery stuff. Why isn't it posted?
I haven't been very active with the yarny stuff but I have spun 1 yarn for ht library and 1 yarn just for the sake of going to spinning group. And the most exciting thing happened at Spin Group last week! I'll tell you about it in a minute.
First up: "Fizz! Boom! READ!" for the library's Summer Reading Program. It is just like all those other yarns I made with the neon "bubbles" in the black 2 ply, but this time there is no pink. I was going to do it all green bubbles but I didn't have that much green left so I had to put the blue in there. AND holy crap. I thought I had uplaoded that pic but I guess not, I was so busy uploading the ones of my 4 year old and my monkeys I missed that one somehow? WHAT? And I already deleted it? WHAT? And I've already given it to the library, WHAT?! So... Just picture it in your head. Not hard. Looks like this without the pink...

So about the Spinning Group. I had a small (1.2 oz) batt that I made a couple year ago just hanging out so when I decided to go to the spin group I took that and some matching roving (sheep shed maybe?) and spun them up into this:

And then while I was there another lady from our fiber guild who weaves but doesn't spin and has a bed and breakfast and some land up on the east side of town stopped by carrying 2 bags. Apparently her neighbors "inherited" a pack (herd?) of Alpaca and they were sheering them and asking 25$/blanket, which is really good apparently. I don't currently have the funds for it but seeing as she doesn't spin she was wondering if one of us spinners would be able to take it and see what was to be seen and split the yarn with her, to sell in her store or knit or weave with it at her leisure. I looked at the fleece and it was amazing! LOOK!

She said in the end there will be 60 of these, various colors. The other one she had on hand at the time was white and it was really pretty, too. I am excited to start selling at the market again this summer so I can justify buying more of this! Hell, I might even just buy some and call it part of my "investment" money for the market and use it to spin at the market. Local fibers always draw more attention, you know? I am so excited!
10  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / 2014 Monkeys! on: May 29, 2014 07:04:17 PM
Extreme close up! WOAH!

Warning: Lots of Words and Lots of Photos!

So for reasons that Craftster doesn't like us discussing, I am making lots and lots of monkeys. Last year I had a thread where I posted all of my finished monkeys and just kept it going as I made more. I decided rather than expand that thread I would just start a new one for this year.

My goal for the month of May was 20 monkeys. I made it! And I wanted to keep going but I had other goals that I am still not finished with yet so I had to stop. Sad But my goal for June is at least 30 monkeys so when stuff starts on July 12th hopefully I will have enough stock Wink Before I started on the design stage of the monkeys I had to get all of the monkeys I had in progress to the "Hooker Stage" (faceless bodies) and that was my goal for April that I just barely squeezed in under the wire, like 1139 April 30. Just for reference, I had 6 overflowing boxes (5 lb fiber fill boxes) full of Hookers in the bottom of my Ballroom Stairwell.

Not all of these are going out to the public. The first I made was for the Public Library's Summer Reading Program. This year the theme is "Fizz! Boom! Read!" and all science related. So I made this guy:

This one was made for a birthday party my 4 year old went to. She actually designed the whole thing, with me just giving pointers and a couple vetoes. Of course I stitched him, but she did the real work. The little girl loved him!

I was stitching at BK and a lady I know from Jazzercise saw and ordered a monkey for her grandbaby, so I made this guy just with that in mind.

My friend had a Gender Reveal baby shower and since she wouldn't even let me in on the secret before hand I had to make a boy monkey and girl monkey for her. I figured whichever one she didn't need I could always do away with later. (I know you guys don't like me talking about what I do with these but man, this is hard censorship. I hope you appreciate my censorship!)

It turned out that she is having a girl and I was glad because I liked the bow better than the beau.
Also, the beau has a mustache in case you can't tell in this photo.

So they sell baskets at the Market and every week they have a raffle for one full of goodies that different vendors have donated that week and the proceeds go to the market itself. Last year I only donated a monkey 1 week, near the end, and the guy who is in charge of the market got mad at me for donating something worth so much. BUT the lady in charge of the raffle told me that she had never sold as many raffle tickets as that week and it was all because of my monkey. So this year I've decided to make "Mini Monkeys" out of infant knee high socks (did you know they make those?!) and the only way anyone can get one, unless it's a personal special request for a gift or something, is to win it in the raffle basket! HA! Take that, Lester! Tell me I can't contribute to the community...

And now a bunch of generic monkeys that were not made with special intentions in mind.

Specs: each monkey takes me about 3 hours to make, even the Minis. I use all real socks, mostly bought at Target and the Dollar Tree. The decor on each is mostly made from Hobby Lobby felt, various buttons, and this year I started using a cotton craft thread. Last year I used DMC floss to stitch but this time I found new thread and I love it! It really makes more of a statement on the felt than just 2 ply floss.

Making this post has made me realize I need to make more without the use of buttons so they are appropriate for children under the age of 3. I hate it when people take them for new babies and they have buttons on them! It makes me so nervous!

Questions and comments greatly appreciated!
