2  BATH AND BEAUTY / Bath and Beauty: Discussion and Questions / embeds. on: April 07, 2014 05:15:44 PM
So, last week I tried to make some mp soap. I wanted it to be clear, with yellow and purple embeds in.

To begin with I made yellow and purple slabs of opaque soap. I allowed it to set and then cut out lots of small shapes using cutters. The shapes are roughly 1" in length, and a couple of cms tall.

I then melted some translucent soap and added a couple of drops of blue. I then poured over the embeds.

This happened:

My questions are why did this happen? How can I prevent it happening in the future. Is it because my shapes were so tiny?

I'm also interested in knowing if there is a way to get embeds throughout the soap and not just in the bottom of the bar?

Many thanks
Sarah
3  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General / Orange and turquoise peyote beaded bracelet on: April 07, 2014 01:26:22 PM
I made this bracelet for my partner in the Box of Colour swap. It is a basic pattern - but having only started beading in December I was quite pleased that I was able to make the pattern myself.

Hope you like it Smiley
4  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General / simply strung jewellery on: April 01, 2014 05:44:26 PM
So this evening I have been working on some simple strung jewellery!  I made 6 pairs of earrings, 1 necklace and 1 bracelet in an hour and a half!  I will post some more complicated things soon. These are all going to be donated to the WI raffle tomorrow night. This is a big step for me.  A year ago I did not have the confidence to even join, tomorrow will be my first meeting and I am offering up jewellery for the raffle, which will be my first time ever of putting my jewellery in public!

Anyway sorry for the ramble here are the pics.

Super simple but effective earrings.  I love these beads but they shout 'earrings' at me and I can not think what else to do with them...any ideas?  I made 2 pairs of each.  One set for me and one for the raffle.

Daffodil inspired necklace. I love making these necklaces but this is the first time I have had a row of spikes ontop as well as the dagger beads. I love the effect!

Lastly a bracelet: I have real trouble with bracelets.  I either make simple strung ones which take 10 minutes or peyote ones which take days. I need to find inspiration to a middle ground.

5  Archive of Past Craftster Challenge Entries / CHALLENGE 96 ENTRIES / Jewellery box (IsikkahJai dont look til you've received!) on: March 08, 2014 08:59:50 AM
For my wonderful partner IsikkahJai in the recent box of colour swap I decorated and sent a little wooden box as a jewellery box. I bought the box in a local craft store - and 2000 flat backed gems from ebay (1000 of each colour).

I painted the box with a couple of coats of orange (the colour theme for the box was orange and turquoise) and then got glueing! After 4 days of glueing I can honestly say if I ever see a flat backed gem again it will be WAY too soon! These things were TINY - and it took me forever!

Then I got 4 big wooden beads from my stash and painted them orange. The colour did not take as the beads had a gloss varnish on - so I got out my file and filed them right down to the wood - getting rid of varnish and pattern - and then painted them orange again - they still took three coats - but it did adhere a lot better. I cut out felt circles which I glued onto the wooden beads - before attaching the beads to the bottom of the box. I then glued a butterfly charm onto the front of the box.

I then covered it with a gloss varnish to give it even more sparkle

I did not take photos of the inside for some reason - but the top and bottom of the inside were lined with more orange felt - the sides on the inside I left bare.

Anyhow - photos! Firstly the lid....

the front - which shows the butterfly and the feet - I glued the feet on in a diamond formation rather than a square - just to be different!

and the bottom/feet

Anyhow - I hope you like it, but more importantly I hope my partner likes it!!

6  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Beads: Completed Projects / hospital entertainment! on: March 05, 2014 04:24:37 PM
I am currently in hospital feeling rather sorry for myself. in order to pass some time I asked my husband to bring me in some of my beading supplies. I only have basic supplies so I have been doing strung things but I like how they have turned out so thought I would share.

First I made myself a simple bracelet:

When one of the other patients saw me playing she said how much she loved beaded bracelets and then jokingly asked me to make her one, so I did:

She was really pleased with it and asked what I wanted for it but I told her it was a present. She commented on how much she liked it and the fact it had red in as red is one of the colours she does not have a bracelet in, so as a surprise I made her another one which was all red:

Then I was fed up of simple stringing and wanted to try something new so I made this one it is strung on three wires, the big purple beads string all three and between them are three seed beads, one on each wire, I quite like the effect! The light is all out as photo was taken on my phone using flash:

Then today I spent most of my time making this necklace. I am slightly undecided about the purple seed beads, do people think it would look better in a green colour?

An awful photo of me wearing it so you can see how it hangs:

Thanks for looking all comments welcome, constructive criticism encouraged =)

Btw the wire findings on my earlier bracelets were the first I have ever created myself. They're far from perfect but I am quite proud of them!!

So, who doesn't love rainbows?? They are bright and pretty and brighten up a dreary day, just like a Craftster swap package should! If you agree with that, keep reading. If not, why are you here in the first place??? Wink

This swap will be to create a parcel containing 8 products. Seven of these will be a single colour (one item for each colour of the Rainbow) and one will be every colour of the rainbow.

Requirements for the actual items are at least four hand made, the other four can be handmade or shop bought. This should be discussed with your partner, but I will ask in the questionnaire if you would like to hand make more than four. You will not have the option of making less than four. At least one of the hand made and one of the shop bought must be mediums, the rest can be small. Again please discuss with your partner if you would like to exceed this.

As this is a fairly big swap I have allowed 6 weeks of crafting time. To ensure that everybody is still on board I request that you post in the swap thread once every two weeks minimum. At the end of the third week/beginning of the fourth I will send a PM to everyone to ensure you a) are still around and b) not having any trouble/worries.

A few asides firstly this is the first swap I have organised so if I do something wrong/ miss something etc please tell me politely and I will rectify it.
Secondly I am not in the best health, and while I am 100% sure I can manage this and see it through to the end, there might be the odd day I am not around/unable to respond. If this is the case I apologise now! It would really help me if if I have not replied in 48 hours you give me a gentle nudge!
Lastly, with the above points in mind a co-organiser would be appreciated, send me a pm if you feel you can help! I would request for this swap though that a co-orgAniser has experience of organising a swap!

Now onto the questionnaire! I want to match everybody up as well as possible...so apologies for the amount of questions!!

Thanks so much to ybunnygurl for the following, am posting here so it is easy for us all to find Smiley
Oh, I need to know...what is the color difference between blue-indigo-violet?  I don't know what color indigo is.  Like a light colored denim?
OK this is a weee bit complex, but not really. Here look at this color wheel.

See Blue?
See Violet?
See the color in between, Blue-Violet?
Blue-Violet is Indigo
or...
Here is a example with the Hex numbers used for HTML but it gives you a good idea of Indigo

And then there are some people who just have got it Bass-ackward and think Magenta is Indigo.

8  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / Talk About The Swap Process / deadline dates UK/USA on: February 28, 2014 09:37:25 AM
Hi I'm really sorry for all the questions, am just sorting out organising my first swap and want to ensure it all goes well!

Is there a certain local date to request as deadline?

By this I mean, I am in the UK so with time difference etc Sat 15th for me could be Sunday or Friday for the participants. This is not so bad for send outs (as a couple of hours out won't have much effect) but if someone is waiting for feedback or signing up last minute for any other reason I would hate to close before they got in.

Lastly if there is a specific one I should be using which is it???

Thanks
Sarah =)
9  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / Talk About The Swap Process / number of swaps on: February 27, 2014 10:26:51 PM
Sorry if this has already been asked I can't find it anywhere!
Am I allowed to be in 5 swaps organised by others and organise/take part in a sixth? If not am I allowed to be in 5 swaps and organise a 6th without swapping?
Thanks
Sarah =)
10  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General / Purple 'spike' necklace and earrings on: January 29, 2014 05:16:50 PM
Having made two sets of jewellery for my Cousin's birthday present I decided I ought to make myself a pair to wear to her party! It is fancy dress and I will be wearing long gloves (I am going as purple from head to toe, including a wig- and possibly facepaint! Purple is her fave colour - and mine, and the theme is something which reminds you of her)

The necklace is a simple strung necklace - but I think it is effective! The circles between the 'spikes' (I'm sure they have a proper name?!) are little amethysyts received in the recent bead soup swap - and the spikes are transparent purple/bluey glass

hope you like them Smiley
