Starting with a scarf is a good idea.
I think a couple of people have asked about the pom pom on the end of the original and I'm pretty sure I know how to make it. With long strands of yarn, make a normal tassel tied at the top with a separate strand of yarn. Seperate the strands into 3 groups and tie each off. Tie each group once more. Clip the strands to even them out.

I like to do personal swaps now and again.
I knit, crochet, and make stitch markers.
Just pm me if you wanna swap.

start with a dishcloth! scarves take a long time for a new knitter and you might get discouraged (I know I did). here are some cute dishcloths using just knit and purl, super easy:
http://www.knittingknonsense.com/LOVEcloth.html
(i'm making this one now but you can take off the last part to see a bunch of them.) or google knit dishcloth washcloth patterns. and you will use it and love it!

when I read this, I was thinking... "dishcloth? why would I want to make one of those?" but it's cute!
maybe I will make one. thanks arabella

I think a scarf is a great first project, it's how I started out. I wouldn't recommend this one though, because the rows are soo long, they may discourage you.

This looks goregous and I must admit, I saw your post and the original scarf and then as I watched Gilmore Girls last night (I had to tape it, due to all my stupid studying) I was like OMG CRAFSTER SCARF! lol
Do you have a pattern for it?

A few people were interested in making the scarf, so here's what I did for mine.
I used size 10.5 29" needles and bulky yarn. I don't know how many stitches I cast on, but it was as many as i could squish on the needles and a multiple of 4, + 2. I worked it in a k2p2 rib for 22 rows, slipping the first stitch of each row, then cast off with a stretchy sewn cast off. Then I picked of 6 stitches on the end of each side, decreased two stitches each row to create a triangle. I made my pompoms a few inches wide (you can google for tutorials on those) and attached them to the tips of each triangle.

do you know roughly how much yarn you used? I want to make this but I'm not sure I have enough bulky. guess I might need to do more yarn shopping!
