Guess who figured out how to make custom lightweight garter belts?
ME.
Guess who's putting a tutorial together soon to show you all?
ME.

I'll change the topic to show when the tute is up, hope you guys are as freaking EXCITED as I am.

Love,
Hayley Jane

Garter Belt Tutorial

You will definitely need:
4 Snaps
Elastic or ribbon
Fabric
Pins (these are handy)

I used, but you don’t have to:
Grommets
Hammer
Basket full of kittens (okay, these weren’t used, but they kept me company)

STEP ONE:
Measuring!  You’re kind of making your own patern here, so measuring is important.  Meaure around where you want the belt to start, where you want it to end, and how long it is between those two points.  Record these numbers.  Now, divide the first two numbers by four in order to make your pattern.

STEP TWO:
Fabric time!  Fold it in half length wise and then not-length wise.  Along the not-length wise folded edge, mark how long the garter belt is supposed to be.  At the top of that, mark your top-divided-by-four number, at the bottom do the bottom-divided-by-four number.  Connect said two points with a slightly curvy line, like you were doing the top of an A-line skirt. Cut this out, unfold. It should look like

That.  You will need four of these pieces.

STEP THREE:
Mark how the garter belt should be shaped.  Mine looked like this.

Cut two of the panels in half to make your back panel.  Notice how one of those is a half?

STEP FOUR:
Sew two halves to one long panel, and then two halves to one long panel, on the slightly curvy line that we made earlier.  This is basic, you should know how to do this.
OBLIGATORY SEWING MACHINE SHOT!

When you’re done, you should have two things that look like this.

STEP FIVE:
You know that elastic?  Yeah, that comes in handy right about now.  Cut four pieces, two being how long you want in the front plus about an inch, two being how long you want in the back plus about an inch. This is my elastic….

STEP SIX:
Using you hottttt sewing/pinning skillz, pin them in like this, sandwiched between the two panels you just made.  Obviously the ones meant for the front would go along the long panel, and the ones meant for the back would go with the two halves.

Sorry for the blur, but you know what I mean.

STEP SEVEN:
Stitch along the bat-wing curvy panel, reinforcing the places where the elastic is. See here:
Tuck the elastic insind the two panels, and stitch across the top.  Don’t catch the elastic in that top seam, pins are helpful for this.
When you’re done, and everything it turned all right-side-out, it should look like this.

STEP EIGHT:
Turn in or under the ends, and stitch. LIKE THIS!

STEP NINE:
Make four little tabs of fabric, like this.

Turn them right-side out, finish the edges, blah blah blah.  Fold them in half and stitch one on each end of elastic, right side out.  Reinforce the backs.

Then sew hald a snap on the inside of each half of the tab.

STEP TEN:
Finish the back however you wish, be it with ribbon, grommets, whatever, just so you can actualy put it on.
I used grommets.

Ta-da! You’re done.  Here’s my garter belt in action.  Yes, I do have Hello Kitty hot pants on. I made them myself!

Sorry for the blur.

Oh, you don’t know how to actually put it on?  One hald of the snap goes on one side of the tights, the other goes on the other half, snap them together…voila!  This is not meant for heavy-duty socks or tights.  This is meant for hosiery, fishnets, etc.

If you have any questions, just ask!
