OK. Speaking of obsessed… I just have to say My name is Leah and I’m a kitsch-o-holic.

One of the things I make and sell at my shop Magpie and at craft fairs is fridge magnets made from kitschy old (1950s and 1960s) figurines.

You can see the magnets in this Boston Globe article about Magpie and Bazaar Bizarre.

I hunt high and low for all kinds of figurines (not just bowling). I spend hours and hours of my life looking for them in various places. The thrill of the hunt is just as fun as finding them.

Recently I noticed my supply of bowling figures was running low. Because these are old dead stock, I always worry when this happens because I know I may never find them again. So on a whim I decided to try eBay and I ran across an auction for a lot of hundreds of the very same kitschy old plastic bowlers! So I snatched them all up and they just came in the mail today.

I even got some mini bowlers which I’d never seen before!

I’m thrilled and ashamed at the same time! I’m such a packrat! I must shove these into my craft closet before anyone sees! ;)

  1. I LOVE them. And no fear, all crafty geniuses are the same.We end up never using the best of our stash for fear it might be the ‘wrong’ use for it!

Hey Leah, if you’re ever in Chicago, come by Uncle Fun (http://www.unclefunchicago.com/) for tons of little kitchy figurines. They have tons of them, all separated into drawers of old library card catalogues. Tons of fun to be had for just pennies! It’s a great place for hours of browsing. :)

    Stash owners unite!

You can find those crazy little things at cake-decorating supply store – not that you’ll be needing any for a while.
    Here’s an example:

Glad to know I’m not the only one who’s obsess with tacky plastic things! Oh and I’ve never been to Uncle Fun but I’m dying to go. When I was visting Minneapolis last summer I went to a store called Sister Fun which is supposedly a branch of Uncle Fun but much smaller. It was awesome. You can see what I got here:

  10. Leah says:

I was wondering too! I’m going crazy.. bring it back bring it backkkk!

  11. I think I’m having craftster withdrawl. I left in the middle of class just now to sneak downstairs into the library to check and see if it’s back. I’m stressing. I want to post pictures of the SnBN “candy stripers” messenger bag i’m working on for the knitalong.

and about those bowling guys… too funny. I instantly imagined them all lined up on little shelves in some Florida woman’s bright red living room. (Either that, or glued to the top of a car)

Don’t be ashamed though… you should see what i’ve got going on in my room. How many times have I said:
“well, I’ll keep it. I’m sure there’s SOMETHING I can do with it.”

    :) the bink

There’s a store like Uncle Fun in Columbus called Yankee Trader. I used to go there all the time when I lived there.
Gosh, I miss it!! Check it out if you ever go. It’s on High St. along with most everything else of interest in Columbus.
