Mr X Stitch Presents: The Cutting (& Stitching) Edge – Evelin Kasikov
|Share the love...||
Welcome to the Cutting (& Stitching) Edge! I’m Mr X Stitch and I’ll be your guide to the best in contemporary embroidery. Each week I’ll showcase someone who is rocking the world of embroidery and textiles.
Evelin Kasikov is a graphic artist based in London.
She has become renowned for her CMYK cross stitch pieces, which have been featured in a range of publications.
Evelin says this about her Printed Matter series: “My aim is to bring together craft and modern technology, and explore the possibilities for printing processes to be integrated with textile techniques. My main influences come from Swiss typography, Dutch book design and Estonian language – in no particular order. By mixing high and low tech, screen based media with slower crafts, I investigate different ways of seeing and experiencing visual messages. The project is based on my specially developed CMYK cross-stitch technique. ”
I’m a bit of a font geek (Helvetica Love!), I confess, so anyone who combines fonts and stitching is a winner with me.
The CMYK style of cross stitching is a clever device and Evelin’s exploration of colour combination creates some dramatic effects. The print effect can never be achieved in stitch and it’s interesting to see what Evelin achieves with her work.
