I’m Beefranck, Queen of Ironic Stitching and Editor-in-Chief at Mr X Stitch. I know a thing or two about cool stitchery and it’s my pleasure to share my finds with you. So let’s do it!

Hi everybody! This week I want to show you some pieces from Nicola De Jager.

She reached out to us about her calavera and I am very glad she did.

I asked her to tell me a little about it. In her words: I have always had an affair with art but have had a miserable relationship with traditional art materials to be able to translate my thoughts into art works that speak to me. About two years ago I picked up embroidery again by pure chance as a time filler and as a result thereof ‘Calavera’ came about.

Calavera has evolved from a love of art, colour and tattoos. Each piece begins once I have stitched up the eyes. I like to see it as a birthing process, there is no clear idea of what I would like each one to look like, once the eyes are in place they form a personality and so I choose the remaining colours, mouth and nose elements, etc.

I use a combination of hand embroidery and beading. Every item is unique and produced entirely by hand. I am not a fan of mass production so time is not of the essence when producing each skull.

I want to change people’s perceptions about skulls, instead of the fear we feel I want to invoke a smile from the viewer. And if by looking at one of my skulls, you cannot help but smile then I have achieved my objective.

See more of Nicola’s work at her website. Great things await!

Beefranck is the Queen of Ironic Stitchery and the binding polymer that holds together the Emergency Pants podcast, the Stitching n Junk podcast and MrXStitch, the best contemporary embroidery and needlework blog around. If you really want to get to know her, she’s usually getting up to shenanigans on Tumblr.
