Floral Mini Art Quilt Creative thoughts from Craftster Guest Blogger MareMare

Mini Art Quilts are all the rage! Or at least it seems like that these days; these adorable little guys are popping up all over. Check out this post by FOC korok and see two projects for the price of one! Ok, that price is free, but you still get two quilts.

Although korok named the post “beginner fabric wall art,” I don’t see anything “beginner” about these mini pieces of art, especially since she used some lovely techniques, such as thread drawing and raw edge appliqué. The beauty of mini art quilts is that you can use any number of techniques and they do not even have to include piecing or other traditional quilting elements. Some techniques I’ve seen in mini art quilts are embroidery, piecing, raw edge appliqué, turned appliqué, thread drawing, “crazy quilting,” painting, beading, and adding any kind of embellishment that you might find in your sewing box! These can also be great practice before diving into a larger quilt, or if you have been making larger quilts and have run out of beds to cover…you probably still have some wall space!

This post highlights butterflies and flowers, but your mini art quilt could be anything that delights your soul and fits your interests, or it could be completely abstract! Wonky houses and Super Mario Brothers mini quilts are very popular, and I’ve been eyeing a paper pieced Harry Potter block that I think would translate well into this art form. So, what is the theme of your next mini art quilt going to be?
