I love so many of the books by Storey Publishing so I was so excited when Kari Chapin contacted me a while back to interview me for a book she was writing for them. (If you love well written “how to” books that are also beautiful to look at, you should take a look at all of Storey Publishing’s books!)

Kari Chapin’s new book is called The Handmade Marketplace and in a nutshell it’s all about how to make a business out of selling your crafts. In addition to all kinds of sage advice of her own, Kari invited a bunch of people with crafty businesses of one kind or another to give their input on what they’ve learned along the way such as Caroline Devoy from jcarolinecreative.com, Matt Stinchcomb from etsy.com, Megan Reardon from notmartha.org, and many more crafty biz people. (Myself included!)

All I can say is… Where was this book when I was starting out?! This book covers everything from setting up a great workspace to create your crafts to branding and advertising to maximizing online selling tools to selling in brick and mortar stores. Yes, it’s true that there are a bazillion books out there about starting your own business and you can glean little nuggets here and there from all of them, but how awesome is it that there’s one that focuses on selling crafts? I say, very awesome.

I’ve been around the block with “crafting as a business” in many ways. I’ve sold at craft fairs, been the organizer of craft fairs, been the owner of a brick and mortar store, and started Craftster. Every page in this book has something “spot on” that I’ve encountered in my own travels and a bunch things I didn’t know.

So if you’re thinking about starting your own little crafty side gig or aspire to have a crafty business as your main gig, I highly recommend this book.
